A Tribute to Dan Vorheis
November 1952 - January 2014
Dan Vorheis, was a valuable member of the Moonfyre Team. Being the first face people saw when they came into Moonfyre, Dan was frequently seen as “the face of Moonfyre.” Sitting behind the register, Dan would greet each person who entered the store and, frequently, with some sort of playful comment. He made people feel welcome and at ease. He was so easy to be around that it was not uncommon for there to be playful banter and sharing of stories shortly thereafter. By the time people left they had a renewed sense of spirit and plenty of products in hand that would meet their particular needs. His presence made each day fun and our customers came from far and wide to see him.
But he wasn’t known just for his warm heart and amazing social skills. Dan was known for something much, much more. Dan’s huge heart, simple charm and witty sense of humor made him easy to talk to and easy to trust. He was one of the best listeners and support people we have ever known. His ability to listen, to care, and to support a person on a deep level made Dan one of the most quietly influential people we have ever met. I use the word “quietly” because Dan never talked about the people he sat with and helped. He never looked for praise and he never told their “secrets”. He just listened, loved, and supported. It was a gesture and lifestyle that would follow him through his time here and well after his death in 2014.
When Dan died, there were tears shed far and wide. His death came as a shock to everyone. Not just because he passed suddenly but also because, (I believe) everyone expected that he would be here forever. He was always at coffee down the street or here at the store. He was just that kind of guy. He was the “rock of Gibraltar.” Guys like him don’t get sick and they don’t die. But, he did and not without a fight. It took two life threatening illnesses together to take him away from Moonfyre and those he loved. But, he’s not gone.
We at Moonfyre Metaphysical have heard many stories about how even after his passing he is still there for those he helped. They share how he has come to them in their dreams to support or guide them. Some say that they heard his voice in their head giving them advice. Many have seen his spirit at Moonfyre Metaphysical. We know that we have felt his presence many times and have received messages from him that he is well and even enjoying his favorite pastime “fishing.” Clearly, he still around us all and doing what he loves best: being there for people and fishing.
But what makes this situation so special is that it wasn’t until after Dan passed that we found out just how many people’s hearts Dan touched and how deeply they were affected. He never told anyone what he was doing so unless someone shared with us about their time with him, we never knew until now. Dan gave freely of his heart and STILL gives the same way. He is there for people and is spreading the word about love, compassion, courage, and determination even after his passing. He is, and was, truly an Angel sent from heaven and we wanted to honor the work that he did on and off the radar during his time at Moonfyre Metaphysical. Dan will be deeply missed but his memory will live on through our hearts and our actions.
May he rest in peace, love, honor, and with coffee in hand at his favorite fishing spot. He will be remembered always. Our deepest love and gratitude to you, our dearest, Dan.
